Teaching Experience
Residency program 1993 -1996
From my 4th year of residency in 1993, as chief resident, I taught and instructed medical students and young residents. It was a positive experience and helped me understand themeaning of “the wisdom to teach and the joy to share it.” I continued to lecture and instruct medical students during their medical school program, and soon after, I became involved in teaching the ObGyn residents as well.
Fellowship and PhD period 1996 -2002
During my fellowship in gynaecological oncology and during my PhD studies, I continued to teach medical students and residents of obstetrics and gynaecology. I enjoyed very much lecturing both obstetrics and gynaecology to medical students and residents. I also trained young residents in gynaecological surgery in open and in minimal invasive techniques. Between the years 2000 and 2005 I was a lecturer – researcher at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Hadassah University Hospital.
Lecturer period 2000 – 2005
I was a Visiting Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in both the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Hadassah University Hospital, and at the Ioannina University Faculty of Medicine, Ioannina, Greece during 2004-2007. I gave lectures to medical students as well as residents, mainly on gynaecology and new technologies. I participated in staff meetings and presented difficult cases and their management. Common programs of teaching, research and cooperation on teaching skills were advocated. In 2004, I organized in Cyprus the biggest workshop on diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy ever done in Europe, using animal models, bovine uterus, and bladders. One hundred and forty doctors, from 24 different countries (from Iceland to Iraq) participated in that educational workshop, which was under the auspices of the European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE). This laid the foundation of workshops on animal models.
Honorary Visiting Professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
From 1st May 2005 until May 2011, I was an Honorary Visiting Professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. My position was renewed from Sept 2011 – 2014. I visited the Department several times a year, participating in lectures and presentation of cases. My lectures focused on gynaecological cancer genetics and prevention, targeted to medical students and residents in gynaecology.
Academic activities in Europe
Since 2006, I have actively participated in the formation and performance of the European Academy of Gynaecological Surgery. I have assisted in defining and validating in vitro exercises to teach, train, and test the typical Laparoscopic a) Psychomotor Skills (LPS) b) providing an objective, simple, and accurate scoring system to test the individual student’s ability in this field. Also in providing a training program for in-house training that gives students the opportunity to master and acquire psychomotor skills.
I developed and suggested animal models for diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy and trans-vaginal teaching. The European Academy of Gynaecological Surgery (the Academy) devotes its activities to science, education, training and accreditation in the field of gynaecological surgery and offers a nonpolitical working platform that uses the best scientific evidence in its decision making process.
In 2011, I became Director of the Nicosia Branch, of the European Academy for Gynaecological Surgery. It is a training center which initiated its activities in March 2011 with 2 courses every year www.esge.org, www.theacademy.org
Since 2008, twice a year, I head the Workshops “Endoscopy in Reproductive Surgery Tutorials” and “Life Surgery Teaching” at the EAGS in Leuven, Belgium, where we teach 25 students each time. www.eshre.org
In 2011, I suggested and stressed to ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) the need for the creation of an ESHRE Reproductive Surgery Accreditation Program and Certification in order to teach reproductive surgery together with reproductive medicine. Such an approach will increase the results of take home babies after infertility problems and /or after offering artificial reproductive technologies. It took me a year of long discussions, argumentations and explanations to persuate them accept my proposal for ECRES formation (ESHRE Certification in Reproductive Endoscopic Surgery) which is the first in its kind worldwide. Since 2015 I am the director of the ECRES program. (www.eshre.eu and ECRES WebSurg)
Med tube is a Professional healthcare media library for doctors worldwide, sharing 10.000 medical videos. It includes didactic and rare cases of surgery and videos which are accepted after selection and reviewing by an anonymous referee system. Fifty (50) out of approximately 300 of my own videos case reports were refereed, approved and uploaded during 2011 and 2012 (http://medtube.net and Reference 10)
In 2012 I was appointed by the European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy and the European Academy for Gynaecological Surgery to organize and supervise the ESGE examinations, for 50 participants, for Certification in Laparoscopy in Thessaloniki, Greece, during the 12th Panhellenic Congress in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 17 -20 May 2012. Similarly I was responsible to organize and supervise the ESGE examinations for 85 participants, for Certification in Laparoscopy during the 12th annual congress of ESGE in Paris September 12 -14, 2012 as well as for the following 4 annual congresses for more than 100 doctors in each event:
- 22nd ESGE Annual Congress, Berlin 2013,
- 23rd EBCOG European Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Glasgow 2014,
- 30th Annual Meeting ESHRE, Munich 2014,
- 24th ESGE Annual Congress, Budapest 2015
Since 2012, as a member of the organizing and scientific committee we organize in the University of Friburg in Switzerland every April a special laparoscopic surgery workshop on fresh human cadavers for teaching Gyne – oncological cases. I organized an additional workshop, writing an innovative scientific program and operations time schedules on fresh human cadavers for teaching advanced level of reproductive surgery, in cooperation with the University of Liege Belgium at the end of 2016.
Participation in International Teaching Programs
GESEA Program: 1 of the 3 managers of this program regarding the scientific, organizational and financial management of these courses. The GESEA program implements two stages of learning. In the first stage, a skill certificate is acquired and in the second stage, a clinical program is completed to receive the corresponding diploma. The skill certificate is attained by passing an examination that includes theoretical and validated practical tests. The program provides universally accessible online tutorials, practical exercises, and self-evaluation modules. Three skill certificates are offered in conjunction with three diplomas. The diplomas are awarded in the following order: (a) the Bachelor in Endoscopy; (b) the Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgeon (MIGS); and (c) the Master level. The Master level is sub-divided into two separate diplomas: the Master in Laparoscopy and the Master in Hysteroscopy.
DIGESTT (Diploma in Imaging for Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery Training and Testing) EAGS and ESGE certification program: Head and Coordinators Prof Nazar Amso and Prof Vasilios Tanos: We formatted the syllabus for the DIGESTT program and we are organizing the development of this new training and assessment program. E-learning modules, ultrasound simulation exercises, problem and scenarios based learning and MCQs are included in the program.
ECRES (ESHRE Certification of Reproductive Endoscopic Surgery): Head of the program. ECRES is a certification program that includes, e-learning modules at webSurg, selected topics and bibliography for learning, presentation sessions and videos, training testing and examinations both theoretical, written and video reviewing of unedited surgeries.

I. Contribution to public awareness
In an effort to increase public awareness regarding Gynaecological Cancer prevention, menopause treatment options and endoscopic surgery safety and benefits I published 21 articles in newspapers and periodicals. Additionally I gave 21 lectures as an invited speaker, of the Cyprus Anticancer Society, during their annual campaign for Cancer prevention and treatment and in an attempt to raise public awareness.
J. Review of the participation of current international and local research programs
International research programs
- Congenital Uterine Anomalies (CONUTA) project: A clinical research for a New Classification of Congenital Uterine Anomalies CONUTA by common ESHRE/ESGE working groups: GF Grimbizis, V Tanos, R Campo, S Gordts, S Brucker, M Gergolet, T-C Li, C De Angelis A Di Spezio Sardo A special DELPHI procedure has been followed. Initiated in 2012 and it is still running with various academic activities, research and publication. Currently we are working on classification of adenomyosis.
- Survey among ESGE members on Leiomyosarcomas (LMS): surgery and morcellation. Heads and coordinators: Vasilios Tanos and Hans Brolmann A project of 3 phases. The first 2 phases on LMS incidence and the Morcellation complications, initiated in November 2014 and completed in June 2015. Two publications appear in the journal of Gynaecological Surgery. Currently the phase 3, investigates the clinical characteristics and imaging results of LMS patients. We will try to identify possible clinical risk factors and tumor markers that will help to diagnose high risk patients for LMS.
- ESGE Guidelines for the use of morcellation during laparoscopic surgery: Heads of the study are Hans Brolmann και Vasilios Tanos, Research initiated in April 2014. It is an ongoing scientific project aiming to include 25 European Gyne-Endoscopic Surgery Centers. We investigate the frequency and the risks of clinical and technical complications during laparoscopic and hysteroscopic morcellation. Additionally to develop a protocol to increase the safety of this technique.
- EAGS and ESGE DIGESTT (Diploma in Imaging for Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery Training and Testing) I am working together with Prof Nazar Amso and Dr Rudi Campo to format the syllabus for the DIGESTT program and we are organizing the development of this new training and assessment program. E-learning modules, ultrasound simulation exercises, problem and scenarios based learning and MCQs are included in the program. In addition the results of the training and education will be used for evaluation and research of this new field of imaging during gynaecological surgery.
- Evaluation of the educational programs efficiency offered by the EAGS: All participants will be evaluated for their learning efficiency, during the Academy workshops in 2016, hence the Academy educational programs will be prospectively examined. I have designed special exercises to be performed before the start and by the end of each WS. Various parameters like time, accuracy and number of mistakes will examine and compare the participants and groups acquired skills after adjustment of their surgery experience.
- ESHRE–ESGE Collaboration for Endometriosis Surgery Recommendation: Under the Coordination of Prof RL De Wilde we are a group of experts working and researching for developing recommendations and guidelines in endoscopic surgery of endometriosis. The group of experts consists of Gerard Dunselman, Ertan Saridogan, Vasilios Tanos, Ulrich Uwe, George Keckstein and Grigoris Grimbizis.
- Research to identify the cellular structure and function of the Junctional zone (JZ) endometrium. This JZ is observed between the endometrium amd myometrium only during MRI and 4D ultrasound studies. Trials to diagnose this specific area subendometrial are so called JZ through histopathological examinations failed. I designed this research study, taking endometrial and myomaytrial biopsies by spirotome and investigating the JZ cellular micro-structure using the electrone microscope by 4 medical centers. The selected group of experts consitis of Prof V Tanos, Aretaeio Hospital, Prof K Kyriakou from The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics Dpt Electone Microscopy, Prof Stephan Gordts Leuven, Belgium and Prof Hillary Critchley, Edinburgh Med School.
- SUTUBA study (acronym for SUbtle TUbal Abnormalities) The first phase of this study will be transversal and observationnal to define “The normal tube and its variations” Five selected, well known teams will launch a preliminary study, investigating what are the characteristics of a “normal” tube; because specific subtle abnormalities being probably so common that they can be considered only as normal variations. Data will be recorded during either trans abdominal or trans vaginal laparoscopy, or laparotomy in 200 patients. All patients will be included in the biggest study which will comprise 20 centres for 1 year time. The centres selected are: Coordinator: Pr Antoine Watrelot Lyon (France), Pr Fernandez, Paris (France), Pr Vasilios Tanos, Nicosia (Cyprus), Pr Michelle Nisolle, Liège (Belgium) and Pr TC Li, Hong Kong

Detailed Description of future research planning
Proposed projects
- Image analysis in Gynaecological Cancer
Our Computer Assisted Tissue Image Analysis has provided the data and clearly demonstrated that optical biopsies are feasible and reliable. The main difficulty is to prove that the developed system can offer similar results with all types of equipment and technical options. Gamma correction should be found and applied to the already existing program. Our future research will focus on resolving this problem in order to further continue our trial and provide the final program.
- Trans Vaginal Endoscopy
I plan a multiclinical, multinational prospective randomized study using trans-vaginal endoscopy for high risk ovarian cancer patients in order to reduce the number of unnecessary operations, to facilitate fertility methods, and to understand how ovarian cancer develops. This is the least invasive procedure (2-mm scope) that allows ovaries to be directly visualized and biopsied. Chemoprevention and /or preventive intra-abdominal therapies in these high risk ovarian cancer patients is also possible. With trans-vaginal endoscopy, we can also approach patients with premature ovarian failure, and study the possibility of applying stem cell therapy in treating these menopausal ovaries. We are working on the design of the study.
- Hystero-embryoscopy
My research on hysteroembryoscopic techniques and the potential to examine in vivo the dead embryo (miscarriage) at the very early gestational age of 2-3 weeks and correlate its phenotype to genotype attracted the attention and interest of many colleagues. In addition we plan the potential of gene therapy in thalassemia embryos once embryonal/fetal DNA can be isolated in maternal circulation. I was recently invited to teach my technique in Greece and Italy and I try to encourage and scientifically prove the usefulness of this surgical method.
- Navigation in Hysteroscopic Surgery
Hysteroscopy is perhaps the most difficult endoscopic surgery in gynaecology. The degree of difficulty is increased if there are large fibroid tumors or polyps to be removed or when adhesions are covering both ostia and the landmarks for hysteroscopic surgery. When large pathologic lesions or adhesions hide the landmarks of the ostia, navigation in hysteroscopic surgery can help enormously in performing the operation and providing additional operative safety for the patient. After the pilot study we are now ready to proceed to a more complex plan of research action.
- In situ and real time evaluation of Endometrium functionality
In collaboration with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science University of Cyprus Nicosia we are planning a research study on real-time perfusion monitoring of the endometrial cavity. The results of this study will help identify the extend of destruction that intramural and subserous myomas cause to the endometrial microenvironment. It will be an additional tool to triage patients, separating those who should be managed conservatively from those who should be operated.
This research plan aims to develop an electronic intrauterine device capable of collecting, storing and wirelessly transmitting visual and other biomedical sensor data over a period of several weeks. On the medical diagnostics level, such a device is considered a valuable new gynaecological tool. The female endometrium undergoes a series of natural changes throughout the female menstrual cycle. Currently, all experiments performed to investigate endometrial cell function rely on endometrial tissue being extracted during a biopsy from the endometrial cavity, using a small catheter called a pipelle. However, these cells extracted by biopsies are inadvertently destroyed upon extraction and lose most of their biochemical and functional abilities. Once the proposed intrauterine device fulfills the aforementioned criteria, it will provide ground-breaking medical benefits from long-term monitoring of the endometrium.
- Suggested topics for medical and paramedical students involvement in research
Research topic 1: Review of the literature benign and malignant polyps. Five students can work as a research team on etiology, preventive measures and treatment options. Research on cellular level in basic sciences on genetics, biochemistry histology etc. The clinical aspects in gynaecology, gastroenterology, respiratory system and urological system should also be explored. The frequency of appearance in men and women, correlation to age, risk factors, concomitant diseases and the existence of preventive measures are all included in these studies. Collected data, analysis of the results and conclusive remarks will be all published in the medical school and submitted in scientific journals. According to the results further research will follow with animal models, cell cultures etc.
Research topic 2: An endoscopic surgery tissue image, texture analysis is feasible and our experience on this matter is probably one of the best worldwide. We collected a great amount of data and our CATIA project runs successfully in the last 8 years. We have published 16 papers on computer assisted tissue image analysis and much more can be performed. We can accommodate 5 students to research on these images related to histopathology findings, anatomical regions, pathophysiology mechanisms and medical statistics.
- Electronic simulation for minor operations and practical applications scenarios which they are expected to face as soon as they finish medical school. Eg series of urgent and high risk cases, such as ectopic pregnancy, ruptured and haemorrhagic corpus luteum, ovarian cyst torsion etc. Surgery, ultrasound, MRI videos and images archives, can be used to educate students in anatomy, pathology, indicating the correct clinical examination and the way to implement small operations eg bladder catheterization, venipuncture, etc.
E-Learning: using the internet various presentations slides and short videos can educate students on various Chapters and in accordance with the training program. At the end of the presentation there will be multiple choice questions and answers where students can verify what they have learned.

Administrative experience in detail
Secretary General of the European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) for the years 2014 and 2015.
The European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy has over 5000 members; it’s a non-profit organization and has its official seat at Leuven, Belgium. In 2014 and 2015 I was the Secretary General of the Society. The society is governed by a Board of Directors who designs the strategy of the society for short and long term activities. The daily management of the Society is assured by an Executive Board composed of 5 Officers (President, Vice-President, Past-President, Secretary General and Treasurer), supported by the Central Office, responsible for daily operations. In addition there is an Advisory Board which consists of 16 representative members elected by the ESGE members, the representatives of the Corporate Member Societies and the Ambassador of the Affiliated Societies. I coordinated the Corporate Member Societies, the Affiliated Societies and 12 special interest groups. Under my responsibility was also the organization and upgrading of the website of the ESGE. I was and I am still actively involved in the promotion of the Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery Education and Assessment (GESEA) program a unique certification program in Europe.
Since 2006 one of the four managers of the European Academy of Gynecological Surgery (EAGS)
Since 2006 I am a member of the management team of the European Academy of Gynaecological Surgery. My tasks include the Academy strategy, the management of financial activities and the budget, as well as arbitration when disputes arise.
The Academy is dedicated to teaching and training of gynecological surgery based on scientific evidence and new technological developments. We designed a training program for young doctors to acquire these skills the GESEA (Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery Training and Evaluation) program which is the only certification program in Europe. I am also the coordinator of the academy for the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the Balkans. A large part of the management, organization, logistics and financial budget is prepared by me. Twice a year in Leuven, Belgium, at the Head offices of the Academy I am coordinating and supervising two ESHRE workshops (25 doctors each time). It is an internationally recognized curriculum, for the ESHRE special interest group in reproductive surgery.
Director of the European Academy of Gynaecological Surgery – Nicosia Branch
In 2011 I founded the Cyprus branch of the Academy (European Academy for Gynaecological Surgery – Nicosia Branch) in Nicosia and I am the Director. PLAN HOW TO ORGANIZE THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY
In addition to the existing syllabus and educational standard procedures, I suggest the following.
Structured and integrated educational program in obstetrics and Gynaecology (ObGyn) based on international standards and experiences of other Medical Schools, acknowledged for years as “Ivy league” schools. It should be standards-based in accordance with other educational institutions programs in Europe and America but also tailored to Cyprus needs and peculiarities.
I have direct access to the Medical School of the Hebrew University, the University of Leuven and various others which could be used as reference or for information for their educational programs and experiences.
Learning must be both broad and in depth. Evidence based knowledge should be applied where ever is applicable. Clinical training must be complimentary to knowledge on basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, histopathology, genetics etc and must be repeated when they are related to Obgyn.
Medical students should accompany specialists in ObGyn to their clinics, attending both out patient’s clinics, labour ward and surgeries. On site clinical experience is of vital importance since they can observe the most frequent ObGyn pathologies.
There should be emphasis and priority to ObGyn diseases related to emergencies, in general medicine and preventive medicine.
The educational program for ObGyn must be coordinated with other programs of surgical disciplines such as endocrinology, pediatric, neonatology etc
Graduates of the Medical School should be ready to face incidents in general practice.
Graduates of the Medical School should acquire knowledge and skills so that they can pass exams like ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) for America, PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) for International Medical Graduates practicing in UK) for Great Britain, etc.
Practical Suggestions
Preparing projects and presentations by students in general, Obgyn as well as other specific medical matters. These are presented by each student in the entire group together with their instructor and later exchanged between them. The trainer / instructor should be responsible for the level and accuracy of the work.
Level A – easy diagnosis and treatment cases, related to only one specialty for example Obstetrics and Gynecology
Level B – complex cases (eg accidental or chronic diagnostic findings in general surgery and gynecology, or for instance an acute event of pyelonephritis in pregnancy 30 weeks, etc.) with a long medical history scenario, multiple questions and answers until the final diagnosis and treatment is made.
Simulator for minor operations and practical applications scenarios which they are expected to face as soon as they finish medical school.
