Published October 20, 2015 in <a href=\"http:\/\/jama.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?doi=10.1001\/jama.2015.12783\"><em>Journal of the American Medical Association<\/em><\/a>. 1<sup>st<\/sup> Author: Kevin C. Oeffinger, MD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York.<\/p>\n<p>The American Cancer Society has released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/breastcancer\/moreinformation\/breastcancerearlydetection\/breast-cancer-early-detection-acs-recs\">new guidelines for breast cancer screening<\/a>.\u00a0 All women should begin having yearly mammograms at age 45, and can change to having mammograms every other year beginning at age 55.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Society\u2019s Chief Cancer Control Officer, Dr. Richard C. Wender, MD, new research has helped doctors understand the best ways to use mammograms for screening. A detailed evidence based review, balancing the benefits and harms, led to the below recommended mammography screening guidelines.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The new recommendations<\/strong><strong> for women at average risk for breast cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women with an average risk of breast cancer \u2013 most women \u2013 should begin yearly mammograms at age 45.<\/li>\n<li>Women should be able to start the screening as early as age 40, if they want to. It\u2019s a good idea to start talking to your health care provider at age 40 about when you should begin screening.<\/li>\n<li>At age 55, women should have mammograms every other year \u2013 though women who want to keep having yearly mammograms should be able to do so.<\/li>\n<li>Regular mammograms should continue for as long as a woman is in good health.<\/li>\n<li>Breast exams, either from a medical provider or self-exams, are no longer recommended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Women at high risk \u2013 because of family history, a breast condition, or another reason \u2013 need to begin screening earlier and\/or more often. Talk to your medical provider to be sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Behind the guideline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The goal of screening mammograms is to find breast cancer early, when treatment is more likely to be successful. But mammograms aren\u2019t perfect, and they do have risks. Sometimes mammograms find something suspicious that turns out to be harmless, but must be checked out through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.org\/Cancer\/news\/Features\/if-youre-called-back-after-a-mammogram\">more tests<\/a> that also carry risks including pain, anxiety, and other side effects. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.org\/Cancer\/news\/News\/american-cancer-society-changes-its-screening-guideline-process\">Experts weigh these benefits and risks when making recommendations about who should be screened<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that debates will continue about the age to start mammography,\u201d said Dr. Wender. \u201cThis guideline makes it so clear that all women by age 45 should begin screening \u2013 that\u2019s when the benefits substantially outweigh the harms.\u201d But once a woman turns 55, said Elizabeth T.H. Fontham, MPH, DrPH, member of the Guideline Development Group, screening every other year preserves most of the benefit of screening every year \u2013 with fewer risks.<\/p>\n<p>Breast exams are no longer a part of the screening recommendations because research does not show they provide a clear benefit. Still, the American Cancer Society says all women should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.org\/Cancer\/news\/Features\/breast-cancer-symptoms-what-you-need-to-know\">report any changes<\/a> to their health care provider right away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Talk to your doctor:\u00a0 <\/strong>The best way to know when to begin screening for mammograms and how often to get screenings is to talk to your medical provider.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Begin talking to your medical provider about breast cancer screening by age 40.<\/li>\n<li>Share your family history and personal medical history to determine whether you are at average risk or higher risk for breast cancer.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the benefits, risks, and limitations of breast cancer screening.
